What Would You Do?

It might seem silly & small, but this is getting on my nerves. It got really cold here these past few days (of course, not as cold as you northerners cause I so remember those days), but cold enough that we need to wear winter coats & hats. She has come out of school the last 3 days with her coat unzipped & no hat on. She can not zip her own coat & sometimes needs help with her hat. I made a big deal when she got to the car, but obviously Miss X does not get it. It is necessary to protect her ears with her having issues & probably needing tubes. It is also important to keep warm. How would you approach the teacher? She already avoids me like the plague when she sees me coming. She also avoids eye contact with me as well. I am starting to wonder if she is on the spectrum herself LOL!

I forgot to add that she also has a weakened immune system from her undiagnosed autoimmune issues. This too goes along with trying to keep her healthy.

I would talk to the nurse about tell the teacher the importance of helping her to avoid illness. Also maybe you could get it in her iep to work on coat zipper(that way the teacher or someone has to address the issue).

ditto Colleen.

Another thing to check - are the short buses leaving before the school day ends. That's a frequent issue here.

If it were me, I would talk to the case manager immediately about addressing this situation. If that is the teacher, address it directly and ask that it be taken care of. If not, call an IEP meeting to include the principal and get a goal onto her IEP about learning to zip her coat with supports that the adults will make sure it is done each day.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure it is clear to them that this cannot be ignored and will not go away! And put everything in writing. Even if it's a verbal conversation or phone call, write it up and send it in writing to confirm that's what was said.

Okay, I'm done ranting and raving now. I get so worked up about stuff like this. :)

Does she have a personal aide? Regan has one who is basically her own aide to help in situations and keep her life together at school She is such a blessing! Otherwise I would just confront the teacher tactfully, and if the situation continues, take it to the principal. That way your voice is heard, and MM does not get sick.

This is especially important because MM may not notice herself if she is too cold. Many individuals on the spectrum have lack of sensitivity to heat and cold. I have Asperger syndrome and ended up with frost nip a few times as a teenager from dressing inappropriately for the weather (e.g. wearing tear-away splash pants with nothing over them when it was around 0F). I have also been known to swim in 55F degree water.

We're on the opposite side of this, we get notes my kiddo needs gloves and a hat EVERY day at school.
We had a problem with Jimmy's winter jacket and he wouldn't wear it. We got the glares of doom for sending him in a windbreaker when the weather was turning colder. It was that or he wasn't getting on the bus.
